Type of Metal

This may be one of the more obvious choices to make when it comes to picking out the right wedding ring. Contrary to popular believe, you and your partner do not necessarily have to have matching wedding rings. Therefore, you can both choose whether or not you want to have matching or a type of metal that suits your individual needs.

Silver: Silver has a long history, its first acknowledgements within literature date back to 4000 BCย and to this day, silver is known for being one of the oldest metals to make jewellery. As silver is a softer metal, like gold, it is often combined with other metals to make it stronger and therefore more durable. It can also be coated in rhodium to help with its long term durability.

Gold: Gold comes in three different colour variations; yellow gold, white gold and rose gold. This not only applies to wedding rings but also other pieces of jewellery.ย Yellow gold is a classic choice for wedding rings, the colour of the gold can vary depending on the carat. White gold is actually the most popular choice of metal for wedding rings with up to 73% of wedding rings in the market being white gold. White gold is often combined with other white metals and plated in rhodium for durability. Rose gold, also known as pink gold, is the final choice of colour for gold metal. The colour and the hardness of rose gold, similar to yellow gold, and depends on the carat.

Platinum: Platinum is the third most common metal that is used to make wedding rings. It is a heavy and hypoallergenic metal and also very strong which means that it is good for durability. It is often a popular choice for wedding rings as it never loses its shine. It is a relatively new metal within the jewellery market compared to gold and silver,ย as it was only discovered in the 18th century.

Other Types of Metal

Although it is not as common, other metals can also be used other than the three most common, each having their own pros and cons.

Palladium: Palladium is a less expensive alternative to Platinum which can often be quite expensive. It has many benefits as a wedding ring as it does not tarnish like silver, nor does it need re-plating.

Steel: Steel does not seem like an obvious choice when it comes to wedding rings, however, although it is not the most popular type of metal, it is still used within the market. It is well suited for those looking for a wedding ring on a lower budget and has qualities such as scratch resistance which is suitable for long term durability.

Titanium: Titanium is easily recognised by its darker metallic appearance and is a lightweight metal. It is suitable for those that haveย hypoallergenic requirements and is a good second choice if platinum is not your prefered choice of metal.

Ceramic: Ceramic is praised for its high shine, achieved by thoroughly polishing the metal.ย It comes with an affordable price tag, again, perfect for those with a smaller budget.

Tungston: Special attention is required if you decided to choose Tungston as the metal for your wedding ring. Its good qualities include its strength as it is a hard metal and the inability to tarnish, however, the strength of this metal is also it’s downfall as it can be quite brittle.
