Pilot watches have been around since the beginning of the 20th century. They made their mark in 1903, a time where pocket watches were the height of horological fashion. Pilot watches, of course, started with pilots themselves, creating a demand for a new kind of watch as pocket watches were impractical for pilots at the time. Today pilot watches are recognised by their oversized and clear design. The style we see today reflects the first design of pilot watches which is a large dial and crown so the watch can be operated whilst wearing gloves.

It is unknown to many how the wristwatch came to be as it actually began with the creation of pilot watches. The pocket watch was not accessible enough for pilots. They were created at the same time heavy planes were and they needed to be operated with both hands. Therefore, having a watch strapped around the wrist was very convenient for pilots.

Men’s pilot watches today are simplistic in design and are for those that prefer a watch with a more practical design. These are not the kind of watches worn to a formal dinner and rather suit an informal business style. If you happen to be a fan of aviation or pilot watches themselves then we have a wide variety here at James Moore Jewellers. Here are our recommendations.
